Spilling blame: an oil tanker accident enrages environmentalists

Article Abstract:

The oil tanker Sea Empress ran aground near a Pembrokeshire harbor in Wales, spilling an estimated 170 million liters of crude oil. The spill caused widespread damage to local populations of aquatic birds and other marine life. A political furor has arisen over who is to blame for the accident.

Reputed Gambino crime boss John Gotti is being tried on the charge that he masterminded the 1985 murder of his predecessor, Paul Castellano. The chief witness against Gotti is his former lieutenant, underboss Salvatore Gravano. Testimony portrayed Gotti as a cold-blooded killer and racketeer.

The limits of tolerance: Holland tightens its easygoing approach to drugs

Holland is under increasing pressure from its European neighbors and many in the country itself to tighten its drug policy. Many claim that Holland's tolerance of soft drugs such as marijuana and hashish has encouraged organized crime and drug use in neighboring countries.
