Opal mining companies listed on the stock exchange have never hit it big. Three companies prospecting opals include: Queensland Opals, Redfire Resources and Desertstone. Queensland Opals NL (QOP) was floated in 1996 and their prospects are examined. Queensland Opals has plans that incorporate mining, processing and marketing its product.

Iron ore company, Murchison Metals issued a public offering of 28.3 million shares to raise $5.5 million. Murchison holds initial offtake agreements directly and indirectly with 14 Chinese steel mills to deliver up to 1.6 million tonnes of iron ore a year beginning in 2006 through to 2007.
