Surfing with eye-opening ease

Article Abstract:

Austin, TX-based startup Netpliance has developed an information appliance called i-opener that enables users to learn how to surf the Internet and its World Wide Web without the need for a traditional computer. The $199 seven-pound device, which resembles a computer, features a 10-in flat panel color display monitor, keyboard and 56K modem. It gives users a reasonably complete Web experience and an electronic mail account. The helpful, one-touch keys allow one to access instant channels such as those for shopping, news, the local weather report and a personal address book and mailbox.

Cisco chief: virtual close to hit big

Article Abstract:

Cisco Systems Inc CEO John Chambers noted that his firm stands to prosper from a potentially lucrative trend called 'virtual close,' which is the ability to close company financial books with a one-hour notice. This can be done by linking the entire firm including those with foreign operations via intranet. Chambers observed that 40% of the visits to Cisco are from CFO and CEOs desiring to install virtual close infrastructure within their firms.

Information age losing memory

Article Abstract:

Stored electronic data are in danger of being lost in the future because of obsolescence. Computer drives are being replaced by new ones at a fast rate that today's data storage devices may not have a compatible drive in the future. Some archivists are already finding it difficult to access data in 5 1/4-inch and even 8-inch floppy discs. Another danger, but to a lesser degree, is the deterioration of storage media.
