Surges in Energy Prices Examined After Power Failure

Article Abstract:

The massive Aug. 14, 2003 Northeast, Midwest and Canadian power failure is having?an economically frenzied impact?on electric utility prices the day after the blackout, but?energy trading finances are expected to return? to normal as power is restored throughout the affected regions. Those with the most significant economic clout are financial services firms, such as Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Citigroup, which have extensive investments in power plants and play key roles as energy traders. Controlling electric power assets of their own helps to offset major costs after a power failure.
