He considers the slowdown as a challenge for the automaker to streamline its operations and refocus on cost-cutting measures that will not sacrifice product quality. He also believes that 2001 holds a big opportunity for Ford as it is about to launch its Premier Automotive Group, an agglomeration of the company's upscale brands.

General Motors Corp (GM) CEO G Richard Wagoner has begun to see 2001 with optimism after he attended President-elect Bush's economic summit. After the meeting, he realized that the industry suffering from slowing demand will have help from federal officials. Previously, Wagoner made drastic measures as a response to the slowdown. He approved a 1st qtr 2001 production cuts of 2.1% and put an end to GM's oldest auto brand, the Oldsmobile.
