Microsoft chided as antitrust trial draws to a close

Article Abstract:

Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson was not in a lenient mood toward Microsoft at the end of a contentious antitrust trial. He did not see a distinction in Microsoft's defense comparing the software giant to the Standard Oil monopoly case in 1906. More hearings will be held and if sanctions are forced on the company, Microsoft may indeed break into smaller parts, if the Justice Department and state's attorneys general have their way.

Talks in Microsoft case continue as judge's decision looms

Article Abstract:

Attitudes of Department of Justice appear to be getting tougher, despite efforts of appointed mediator to reach a settlement in the government's antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft Corp. The latter's settlement proposal is said to have been deemed inadequate by officials concerned with the public interest. If the litigants fail to settle, Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson may issue his verdict as early as today, although he could hold off several days in light of the continuing mediation.

Clinton team in final plea on Microsoft

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration has asked the 7 judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals to uphold Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson's court order to split Microsoft Corp. in two. The Justice Department is hoping to bring an end to the 18-month antitrust suit in lieu of the possible confirmation of John Ashcroft as the future Attorney General. State attorneys general plan to continue the case regardless of potential Bush appointee. Microsoft has countered with the argument, among others, that Judge Jackson was biased.
