Taste by design

Article Abstract:

Jim Soorley, the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Australia, has called the architectural design of the new Neville Bonner Building ugly, comparing it to the concrete buildings of communist countries. Architects consider the design a trendsetter for the new millenium. Robert Schwarten, the Minister for Public Works and Housing, advised the Lord Mayor to demolish the building and appoint a state architect to review all designs before they are built.

Small-town attitude

Article Abstract:

Statistics suggest that Australian inland towns are vanishing. However, in the 1990s, these towns are enjoying a revival because they attract city people who look for a quiet and improved lifestyle. Many of these new residents consider the cost of living as well. GrowZone is based on such a concept, which originated in Nebraska. GrowZone is located in Queensland's southwest and has a population of about 230,000.

Broken heartland

Article Abstract:

Queensland's central west region is an economically depressed area whose grazing lands and farms have been degraded and whose citizens are leaving for better economic prospects elsewhere. The Stockman's Hall of Fame in Longreach is a tourist attraction on a railway whose older lines are unusable in the summer heat. Politicians are working on ways to revive the area's economy, such as privatizing the railway.
