Tax laws dampen innovative drive: panel

Article Abstract:

A blue-ribbon panel created by the Prime Minister's Advisory Council on Science and Technology reported that high personal taxes and the tax treatment of employee share ownership resulted in the decline of vital innovative startup companies. The panel also recommended that universities that are seeking federal funding should be required to turn over their research innovations to Canadian companies for commercialization.

Tax breaks for options a first step, Roth says

John Roth, the chief executive officer of Brampton, Ont.-based Nortel Networks Corp., said that tax reform is needed to make the high tech industry more competitive worldwide and to halt an exodus of high tech workers from Canada. The tax proposal, which has been drafted by the Liberal Party, will be ibtroduced by Finance Minister Paul Martin.
