This article examines the recent trend among Australian medical researchers to seek a greater share in the profits from their discoveries and to secure funding directly from investors rather than relying on grants from government or schools. Relevant points include several contracts for pharmaceutical research made under the new Pharmaceutical Industry Investment Program.

Gerry Harvey announced on Oct 30, 1998 that he would like to see his whitegoods supply company, Harvey Norman, enter the banking and utility industries. Harvey Norman would become a distribution point for those services. His company is Australia's fastest growing company and he has plans to expand overseas.
