The new military

Article Abstract:

The US armed forces is presently in the process of resolving the many social problems that plague its ranks. The military as an institution has been much quicker and effective in resolving its problems as compared to its civilian counterparts. Problems such as racial tension and controlled substance abuse have been dealt with and resolved by militaty authorities. At present, one issue which has received wide attention is that of sexual harassment. Issues of a strictly military nature, such as allowing women in combat duty are also presently being reviewed.

Gays in the military

Article Abstract:

The armed forces of the US is still discouraging homosexuals from joining its ranks. This policy of zero-tolerance has led to the expulsion from active duty of anyone discovered to be harboring homosexual preferences. Department of Defense Directive 1332 states specifically that, 'homosexuality is incompatible with military service.' Military authorities however, are tolerant of aberrant behavior of the heterosexual variety. Others believe that gays, like women and African Americans, will also one day be accepted in the military establishment.

What jobs in the military are open to women?

Article Abstract:

The four major armed services of the US have different restrictions regarding the assignment of women personnel. All exclude women from direct participation in combat roles but welcome them in various support functions. Career service opportunities would depend directly on the particular requirement of the armed service in question. The Persian Gulf War however, created situations that blurred the distinction between combat support and direct combat functions.
