The perception gap: despite what crime experts say, demands for harsher penalities are growing louder

Article Abstract:

Criminologists report that crime actually fell 5% in 1993, but 85% of Canadians believe crime has increased. Several well-publicized crimes, such as the drive-by shooting of Nicholas Battersby, have made people more fearful. Crime is now ranked as the third biggest problem facing Canada.

Towards the year 2000: Canadians are facing the approach of the third millennium in the grip of unprecedented national despair

Article Abstract:

As the year 2000 approaches, Canadians are becoming more pessimistic about economic security and other issues. A 1995 poll shows that 89% believe welfare will be reduced or eliminated, 62% believe heath care benefits will be reduced, and 58% think crime will worsen.
