Teens need some training wheels

Article Abstract:

Credit card issuers are making it easy for young people to use plastic cards in place of money by offering children as young as 13 prepaid debit and credit card products. These companies desire to capture a share of the $158 billion a year in teen spending. Some of the companies say that the cards are intended to teach teens the basics of managing money while these people are still under parental supervision, because once teenagers get to college, it is frequently too late to teach them money and credit management.

Uneasy banks may tighten loans, stunt recovery

Article Abstract:

An increasing number of bad commercial loans could reduce lending by banks and slow US economic recovery. According to a survey by the Comptroller of the Currency, which regulates national banks, around 50% of all banks have tightened their commercial loan standards in 2001. They cited the economic outlook as the major reason for reduced lending. Some analysts expect bank to overreact to loan losses, despite Federal Reserve Chief Alan Greenspan's request not to choke off credit to good borrowers.
