Faces in fashion

Article Abstract:

Electronic typography is becoming more creative due to the growing processing power of desktop computers. Designs are now created quickly and interactively, and they also better reflect designers' reactions to the world. The 1990s has seen huge growth in jaunty scripts, as well as 'grunge' type designs. Other developments are 'sampled' type designs, which remixes key design shapes from distinct typefaces developing novel commercial directions. Some typeface companies are beginning to avoid overtly sampled designs, however. Another contrasting trend is a move toward very readable typefaces that are not experimental. However, such typefaces can be boring.

A historical hoax: Fun in England but not here

Article Abstract:

The incident mentioned in Col Robert D. Heinl's book on the Marine Corps, 'Soldiers of the Sea' about the burning of Washington in 1814 is found to be a hoax. Since it was a British literary and historical tradition that any serious work should include one hoax, the incident about the Marine barracks and the Commandant's House being spared by the British Marines was distorted, but repeated retelling of the incident has made it a 'fact'.
