Web sites' merger signals consolidation of China's Internet industry

Article Abstract:

Sohu.com's acquisition of ChinaRen.com gives the combined company the largest market share of Internet users in all of China, at about 7.8 million. Because there is often very little differentiation between Web site companies, size is important in China and Sohu.com can expect about 44 million page views per day. Chinese authorities are considering a stock market in Shenzhen where Internet companies can have access to capital. But many cash-hungry sites, such as ChinaRen are not waiting, happily going for health through consolidation.

F.C.C. approves AOL-Time Warner deal, with conditions

Article Abstract:

The Federal Communications Commission has approved the merger between Time Warner Inc. and America Online Inc. To prevent the merged company's dominance in the instant messaging arena, the FCC has attached a condition to the merger saying that AOL Time Warner must make its instant-messaging services compatible with rival Internet company services. The conditions will also prevent a monopoly over high-speed cable Internet services yet to be developed.
