White House postpones sale of high-tech supercomputer to China

Article Abstract:

The Bush Administration delays the sale of a high-end supercomputer to China while it considers whether or not a recent Chinese arms sale to Pakistan violates an agreement between Beijing and Washington prohibiting high-technology arms sales. The US government had viewed the supercomputer sale as an opportunity to improve strained relations with China which resulted when the US sold advanced military aircraft to Taiwan. While senior Bush Administration officials want the sale, Pentagon officials are opposed. In Nov 1992, China promised Sec of State James Baker that it would not sell 11 M-9 missiles to the government of Pakistan. Pentagon officials fear that the Cray Research Inc supercomputer could give the Chinese government the ability to design nuclear weapons.
