Whole child approach

Article Abstract:

Some states and local agencies in the US have teamed up with private organizations and volunteers to represent the interests of children under court supervision throughout the country. The court appointed special advocate (CASA) movement, which started in Seattle in 1976, has grown into 930 local programs, which are further united in the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association to keep a check on the care and services offered to children.

Child abuse and crack

Article Abstract:

The US Congress established a federal adoption-assistance program in 1980 and merged it with the old AFDC foster care funds to create Title IV-E of the Social Security Act, which is now the main source of federal support for child welfare. The efforts made by the states to keep children with their parents or return them as soon as possible, collided with the crack cocaine epidemic and other social pathologies from the mid-1980s through early 1990s.

Orphan trains

Article Abstract:

Charles Lorring Brace organized the Children's Aid Society of New York in mid 19th century, which created the 'orphan train' movement aimed at helping the children live healthy and wholesome lives on farms in the west. The first orphan train carried children to Dowagiac, Michigan, in 1854, further encouraging shipping of some 150,000 to 200,000 children to the states in the west over the next 80 years.
