XL Foods feels the squeeze

Article Abstract:

XL Foods, a Calgary, Alberta-based beef producer, is feeling the effects of a tight market. Although its sales rose 2% since 1998 started, the company suffered a loss of C$2.7 million in the third quarter 1998 or 50% more than it recorded in the same period in 1997. This is on top of a 40% increase in debt to C$14 million and a working capital and cash flow deficiency of C$5 million. Despite these setbacks, XL Foods President Jim Patillo remains committed on improving the company's finances, cutting costs and getting rid of non-core operations.

Ottawa targets EU ban on Canadian beef

Article Abstract:

The Canadian government will either seek compensation or impose trade sanctions on Europeran goods if the European Union fails to lift its 10-year old ban on Canadian beef by May 1999. The World Trade Organization has earlier ruled that the EU's ban on hormone-treated beef from Canada and the US violates international trade rules. However, the EU has resisted removing the ban, saying that exports would still be hampered by quotas even if the ban were to be lifted.
