A note on the energy-efficiency investments of an expected cost minimizer

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the energy-efficiency investments of an expected cost minimizer. The study focused on the high-efficiency and low-efficiency version of an energy-using durable in a simple environment. The versions were identical in all aspects except in terms of operating costs, lifetimes and purchase price. Results indicate that the assumption of cost minimization may yield a relatively complicated behavioral pattern even in a simple binary choice model.

Individual discounting, energy conservation, and household demand for lighting

Article Abstract:

Compact fluorescent lamps last eight times as long and use 80% less electricity than conventional electric light bulbs. However, they are thirty times as expensive as the latter. A behavioral model for studying the tradeoff between purchase costs, operating costs and lifetimes of these bulbs is developed. Results indicate that energy efficient fixtures are still not widely accepted in the market. These necessitate changes in incentive programs for these fixtures.
