Barcelona's Olympic facelift

Article Abstract:

Having the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain are part of Mayor Pascual Maragall's plan for renovating the city, Barcelona 2000. The improvements include the Olympic village which contains 2000 apartments, office space and a 395 room hotel in addition to the sports facilities. The airport and transport infrastructures have also been upgraded. However, the renovations may serve to drive the working class residents elsewhere as a cycle of land price inflation begins in their neighborhoods. Economic development may be at the expense of social stability.
