From flood to food

Article Abstract:

The Gash River delta is a desert area, north of the town of Kasala, Sudan, that is irrigated by the flooding that occurs three months during the year which supports a collection of rivers and basins called misgas. Population pressure, deforestation and reduction of the water table have combined to increase desertification in the region. Political instability and reduced international aid have limited the means available for needed improvements to the system. These improvements include planting trees to protect canals from blown sand and training farmers in techniques to improve the soil treatment.

The greenhouse effect?

Article Abstract:

The expansion of greenhouse horticulture in the Almeria region of Spain has created great economic benefits, but Landsat 5 remote-sensing imagery is providing data showing that the process is seriously depleting local water supplies and beach sand. The region's semi-arid climate means that precipitation does not provide enough water for greenhouse irrigation which results in overuse of groundwater reserves. The reliance on beach sand for greenhouse planting has also caused severe coastal erosion.

Waste not, want not

Article Abstract:

Biomass fuels can be exploited by small, rural industry in less-developed countries (LDCs). Research emphasis must now shift away from technologies, such as producer gas and biogas, and towards application at the local level. Current sources include timber waste, animal dung and agricultural waste. The availability of means of production using energy from biomass fuels is necessary for sustained development of LDCs.
