Frozen warriors

Article Abstract:

Ikaite crystals are mineral formations in the form of stalagmites that are found only in the Ikka fjord in southwest Greenland. Inuit legends say these crystals are the remains of invaders who died in the fjord's icy waters. However, expeditions to the Ikka fjord by various groups report that ikaites are rock formations that grow over the old bodies of igneous bedrocks called syenite as a result of the interaction of the fjord's underwater springs issued from the sea bed and waters, groundwater pressure and extremely low temperature. It is suggested that these crystals were formed during a period when the temperature was much colder than it is today.
