Fuel, crop, and water substitution in irrigated agriculture

Article Abstract:

Increase in electricity costs due to either environmental policies or lack of supply impacts the production behavior of farmers in irrigated agriculture. It can lead to the increase in dry land crop cultivation, substitution of inputs, and crop allocation in the irrigated areas. These findings are based on an analysis using Positive Mathematical Programming with the hypothetical situation located in Arizona and Colorado, two areas of intensive irrigated farming. Although the cost increase is hypothetical, the results still show the impact of such increases.

Land use with endogenous environmental degradation and conservation

Article Abstract:

A land use model which includes feedback between productivity and input application in its treatment of endogenous environmental degradation is developed. The model assumes that farmers want to maximize output by dividing inputs between production and conservation. This input division is applied to a small regional example to examine how degradation and conservation affect agricultural production. Results show that labor-intensive conservation procedures limit the effects of environmental degradation.

Farming in Rondonia

Article Abstract:

The economic and environmental aspects of farming practices in 91 family farms around Ouro Preto in Brazil's Rondonia state are studied from four different perspectives. Production functions for six activities on farms producing a variety of products are derived and determinants of overall farm revenue and wealth are examined. Links between various types of farming practices and the determinants of deforestation on lots are also studied.
