Global village viruses

Article Abstract:

Dr Robert Shope aims to make the world aware of the international scope of previously local diseases. Increased world travel and man's interference with the environment are changing the balance of nature. Viruses and bacteria are being transported to areas where people have not developed an immunity to them. Moreover, unfamiliarity with the symptoms can cause a fatal delay in diagnosis. Dr Shope's and Dr Joshua Lederberg's 'Emerging Viruses: Microbial Threats to Health in the United States' points out that many of the disease-causing microbes have also become drug resistant. International co-operation is necessary to tackle this problem.

Global warming in the dock

Article Abstract:

The Royal Geographical Society recording of Sep 11, 1993 on the issue of global warming is an effort to separate real dangers from the hype of politicians and the press. Skeptics feel that self-serving politicians and media persons have exaggerated bare scientific facts to scare people. Professor Richard Lindzen and Dr John Emsley question the scientific validity of the predictions whereas Professor Bert Bolin and Dr David Carson believe that global warming is a real threat. Professor Martin Parry believes that mankind will be affected, whatever the degree of warming.

The global lessons Tintin taught us

Article Abstract:

Georges Remi, a.k.a. Herge, conveyed deep knowledge of geography, politics, even science, through his Tintin stories. Tintin literally covered the globe, adventuring in Asia, Africa, North America, the Balkans, and the Soviet Union, as well as the moon. He also dealt with geopolitical concepts such as fascist expansionism in the 1930s and the placing of American Indians on reservations. The immense popularity and international availability of the stories attest to their quality.
