Greenhouse madness

Article Abstract:

Responses to the threat of global warming generally focus on reducing the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced, or engineering a way to make ameliorate the effects of atmospheric CO2. Ideas such as suspending 10,000,000 tons of dust in the upper atmosphere, triggering massive growth of plankton in the oceans, a huge reflective space parasol and reducing the moon to rubble have been proposed. The most economically and environmentally sound idea has been reforestation, but disputes with agribusiness over property rights in developing countries pose a problem.

Reaching for the summit

Article Abstract:

Environmentalists fear the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) will fail to address the socio-political issues behind international environmental dilemmas. They worry that the major governments participating in UNCED will merely pay lip service to environmental issues and try to cloak economic objectives with insincere environmental proposals. To be effective, UNCED must note the conflict between the growth-oriented policies of powerful nations and human rights and ecology.

LETS kick-start the economy

Article Abstract:

Local Exchange and Trading System (LETS) plans are a British attempt to improve poorer local economies through the use of local currencies. Over 30,000 people are participating in 400 of these schemes, which allow goods and services to be purchased using locally-accepted alternative currencies. Currencies backed by local government bonds have also been discussed. However, despite the success of these schemes, many politicians resist the idea and Europe keeps moving towards a single centralized currency.
