Growth of a green network

Article Abstract:

Biosphere reserves have been an important method of conserving biodiversity in the long term since their inception in the 1970s. The international network of biosphere reserves is a source of scientific knowledge, skills and human values for the sustainable management of natural resources not only within the reserves themselves but also in the areas where they are located. The network counts 324 biosphere reserves found in 82 countries, the most recent of which are the Cerrado Biosphere Reserve in Brazil and the Wadi Allaqi in Egypt.

Setting a course for development

Article Abstract:

Most of the struggles Ethiopia has experienced in the past 60 years have, in several ways, deepened the country's various crises. Political upheaval, drought, famine, and unemployment have made life for all but the wealthy in Ethiopia a constant struggle. Gross domestic product grew by 2% during 1988-1992, but the population grew by 3% in the same period. The country's only major export is coffee, while aid makes up 75% of all imports. Ethiopia's survival depends on establishing reliable ties to the rest of the world.
