A global disaster

Article Abstract:

The failure of World Trade Organization (WTO) talks in Seattle have reduced the organization's credibility, and the US has given it little support. . There are doubts as to whether the organization is structured in such a way that all 135 members can exercise a voice, and divisions between the US and Europe have deepened. The main US trade negotiator, Charlene Barshefky, did not use an appropriate style to achieve compromise, but was too abrasive, and President Bill Clinton hampered the chances of an agreement by expressing support for some protesters' aims. The US preferred to have no agreement than to run political risks. The opponents of the WTO will increase their efforts and will seek to prevent China joining the WTO.

Into the wood

Article Abstract:

Effective forest management has been recognized as an effective solution to the problem of carbon dioxide emission in the environment. Pres. Clinton's Climate Challenge Action Plan, which is a partnership between utilities and the Dept. of Energy, actually considers this compliance strategy as a viable one. It could be implemented either by protecting existing forests, replanting trees in lands which have been forests once or improving logging practices.

Beauty is back: a trampled esthetic blooms again

Article Abstract:

In the future, beauty will regain its purpose, that of being a healing response to the human condition. It is a happening, not a quality and by 2096, society will have reestablished the real meaning of beauty and this will influence everything from park layouts to entertainment.
