Market distortions and the benefits from research into new uses for agricultural commodities: ethanol from corn

Article Abstract:

Research on industrial uses for agricultural commodities has grown in recent years as farm groups search for ways to stimulate agricultural demand and boost their profitability. Government agencies have been helping farmers in these efforts due largely to the potential of industrial applications of farm produce to reduce the costs of their farm programs. One particularly promising experiment has successfully produced ethanol from corn. A model to simulate the size and distribution of benefits of ethanol produced from corn is developed.

Columbus, commodities and cocaine

Article Abstract:

In the 500 years since Columbus landed in the West Indies, commodities have been the unfortunate mainstays of Latin American economies. Relying on specific commodities has often resulted in disaster. Pressure to produce cash crops has led to shortages of staple foods. Minerals and soil have become depleted. Often a substitute crop or a better method of production ruin export business. Latin American states, with rigid social and political orders, have been unable to change their status as providers of commodities.

Trapped by trade

Article Abstract:

The shift in Latin American countries away from traditional exports to exports of nontraditional unprocessed goods may be widening the gap between Latin rich and poor. Native food crops may be neglected at the expense of exotic export foods. This shift undermines the peasant farmer's ability to grow his own food as well as enough to sell. Government intervention may be needed to prevent exploitation of natural resources in the form of products or people.
