Article Abstract:

Ernest Henry Shackleton's cotton helmet in the Royal Geographical Society collection triggers memories of the remarkable leadership qualities of the Antarctic explorer. Shackleton never really achieved his mission of reaching the South Pole but his greatness lies in the fact that none of his men ever died during a journey and he never left anyone without returning to help them. Shackleton walked across South Georgia to a whaling station to get help for his men after a ship accident. Shackleton was seen as immodest and arrogant by some but his lack of tact was offset by his commitment to duty and to his men.

Object of desire

Article Abstract:

A trip to Siberia provides parallels and reflections on the 1890 expedition of Kate Marsden with her Russian timepiece. A watch was damaged on the 1890 and 1990s expedition, prompting the appreciation for its usefulness. Marsden's trip was to explore the leper colonies, while the modern trip was to explore for a national park and reindeer-herding nomads.
