Freight expectations

Article Abstract:

Some industry observers suggest additional rail terminals will be necessary to cope with the increasing railfreight traffic in the UK. New terminals cost about 8 million pounds sterling each but they also need good access to warehouse facilities. Some observers suggest about 15-20 large terminals and warehouses are required in the South-east of England. Many businesses are using railfreight to transport their goods as the roads become more congested. Some major UK supermarket chains are considering using railfreight. The amount of goods carried by railfreight grew by 12% in 1997.

Raleigh to the cause

Article Abstract:

Raleigh International has supported geological research in an uninhabited area of Chile by organizing expeditions of scientists to study this area of continental subduction with supplies and labor in the form of young venturers. Venturers are young people from all backgrounds that travel to remote areas under Raleigh's aegis and assist scientists at a much lower cost than conventional expeditions. The Chile expeditions have studied earthquakes, glaciation, volcanic activity and extracted pollen-bearing sediment cores from small lakes in the region.
