How BPX implemented dual-career ladders

Article Abstract:

The massive reorganization and culturalchange undergone by BP Exploration and how it attempted to avoid the pitfalls of other dual career ladder systems are described. In a dual career ladder system, individual employees such as technologists and research and developmentspecialists could climb up the corporate ladder as far as managers. Pitfalls ofother dual ladders can range from lack of commitment from senior executives, managers and individual contributors to difficulty in making the scientific/technical ladder parallel to the management ladder.

Sudden destruction

Article Abstract:

The destructiveness of an earthquake depends on its location, size as measured by seismographs, time of day, degree of economic disruption and human behavior. In particular, earthquakes are likelier to kill many people in regions with poor building standards. This explains why the Dec 7, 1988 earthquake in Armenia killed far more people than earthquakes of similar magnitude in California in 1989 and 1992. Hence the enforcement of rigorous building codes is the best way to plan for earthquakes.
