Sustaining a success story

Article Abstract:

Botswana has made tremendous economic and social gains since its independence from Britain in 1966, but continued industrialization, urbanization and possible instability of South Africa make Botswana's future uncertain. In 1966 the main economic activity was cattle rearing and the Gross National Product (GNP) was $14 per capita. The 1989 per capita GNP was $1600, and for 25 years Botswana has enjoyed the fastest economic growth in the world. The main problems confronting Botswana result from vast income disparities. Many unemployed, poor and unskilled have moved to population centers.
