Taming the shamo dragon

Article Abstract:

China is battling desertification that is expanding the 12 deserts comprising 10% of the land. Human activities such as herding and farming compound the meteorological and geological forces that create deserts. The Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Desert Research helps communities reclaim desertified land through physical intervention of topsoil erosion and new grazing and irrigation techniques. Future success depends on sensitivity to residents' social and economic needs and the expansion of programs across regional borders.

Renewable energy from sun, wind and waves

Article Abstract:

Population growth and industrial development are rapidly exhausting the available energy supplies. Energy from renewable sources can make up for some of the consumption, but lifestyle alteration will also be necessary. Renewable energy is more expensive than other expendable energy sources, but only when the costs of environmental degradation is not factored in. Steps should be taken to make non-renewable energy reflect its true cost. Renewable energy sources such as solar, tidal, biomass, wind, ocean- and geothermal are examined.

Taming the wind

Article Abstract:

Hurricanes are especially threatening to eastern and southeastern coastal states, and the US is researching ways to better prepare citizens. While the number of hurricanes hitting the US has diminished over the years, the devastation they cause has significantly increased, due to population growth and real estate development. City planners, the construction industry, and other industries which rely on scientific research must work with scientists to better protect communities.
