The sorry side of Shangri-la

Article Abstract:

One of Bhutan's ethnic groups, the Lhotshampas, is being driven from Bhutan by the government under the direction of King Jigme Sinye Wangchuck. Two refugee camps, one in Nepal and one in India contain 100,000 Lhotshampa refugees who have left Bhutan because of harassment, confiscation of citizenship and property and accusations of terrorism. The government claims these people have left voluntarily. However, a retroactive citizenship law passed in 1985 and effective back to 1958, rescinds the citizenship of the Nepali speaking Lhotshampas.

Group influences upon preferences for personal protection: a simulation study

Article Abstract:

Work groups' influence on individual's safety-related behavior was analyzed. Results show that individuals changed their decisions under risky situations after participating in a group discussion. When making individual decisions, subjects were more cautious and more concerned with their personal safety. However, they exhibited more risky and confident behavior after interacting with co-members of their work group. These findings indicate the effect of compliance on personal safety.
