Calcium homeostasis in dystrophic muscle

Article Abstract:

The Association Francaise contre les Myopathies organized a workshop to discuss the dysregulation of intracellular Ca(super 2+) in the chronic degenerative disease of duchenne mascular dystrophy. Participants of the workshop agreed that dystrophin-lacking preparations, such as myotubes in culture and isolated adult fibers, causes a two-to-threefold increase of Ca(super 2+) influx. They also found evidence that Ca(super 2+) influx has effects on metabolism and can induce apoptosis and necrosis.

Coldhearted building

Article Abstract:

The Public Service Company of Colorado has established a 2,000-ton cooling plant to sell chilled water to the buildings in downtown Denver, CO. The facility designed and constructed by Black and Veatch is energy efficient since it builds a 6-million-lb block of ice when energy costs are lowest in the evening and melts the ice in the day. The facility is useful not only in supplying cold water but also in cooling air in the buildings.
