GERMANY: CLARIANT SUCCESSFUL WITH PIGMENTS

Article Abstract:

Sulzbach-based Clariant GmbH has completed a DM 14mn upgrade of its HPP grinding mill in Hochst, Germany. In the last five years the company has made investments of DM 85mn in grinding facilities at the plant that should produce 4,400 tonnes of organic polycyclic pigments (HPP) in year 2000 and 5,000 tonnes in 2001. Clariant AG expects to generate a turnover of SFr 2.1bn with pigments and additives in year 2000, with earnings before interest and taxes corresponding to 15% of turnover. In year 2000 Clariant is spending SFr 50mn and in 2001 SFr 60mn on pigments and additives research.

GERMANY: RESEARCH INTO PLANT-BASED LUBRICANTS

Article Abstract:

Fuchs Petrolub has tested plant-based lubricants that were developed at the universities of Aachen and Wuppertal . The oleic acid content of rapeseed and sunflower oil was raised from 60% to 80%, while linoleic acid and linolenic acid were removed completely in order to reduce the ageing of the lubricants. The project was carried out on behalf of Gulzow-based Fachagentur nachwachsende Rohstoffe (FNR).

GERMANY/US: SGL CARBON, H POWER IN FUEL CELL R&D

Article Abstract:

Special low-cost graphite bipolar plates for PEM fuel cells will be developed jointly by SGL Carbon of Germany and H Power Corporation of the US. The two partners thus aim to make fuel cell production more economical.
