Stress-axis, coping and dementia: gene-manipulation studies

Article Abstract:

An altered endocrine stress axis often accompanies neuropathological states such as human dementia. This axis, which is the interface for communication between the central nervous system and peripheral glands and organs, is responsible for the mobilization of the stress response. Research on endocrine stress markers, typically conducted with targeted mutant mice, reveals a link between psychopathologies, the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis and the brain corticotropin-releasing factor system.

The expanding family of guanylyl cyclases

Article Abstract:

Two forms of guanylyl cyclase exhibiting receptor activity for different peptide ligands were recently discovered. These two forms, the particulate and the soluble guanylyl cyclases, were characterized in the structural region of the plasma membrane form. Both forms could be activated by a variety of extracellular ligands showing the diversity of the guanylyl cyclase receptor family.

Internet resources for exploring gene family diversity

Article Abstract:

There are many web sites that provide access to gene sequences. A table of sites is included, focusing on ion channel genes, in particular the potassium channel.
