Structure and pharmacology of the proton-ATPases

Article Abstract:

Proton ATPases that form ATP and its intermediates via the generation of a protonmotive force can be categorized into P-, V- and F-classes. The V- and F-ATPases have similar structures and modes of action but have different main functions and energy sources. Moreover, their activity varies from cell to cell possibly due to the interaction of various factors such as lipid composition and the presence of Cl- channels. In addition, the third proton ATPase, which is the P-class, includes the Na+/K+-ATPase and functions through the mediation of phosphoenzyme intermediates.
