The Vulcan kidney

Article Abstract:

The kidneys of Vulcans are used as analogies in studying the physiology and pharmacology of human kidneys. Vulcans, led by Spock, possess three kinds of kidneys called the solute, diluting and the concentrating kidney. In human beings, the last two kidneys correspond to the ascending limb and distal convoluted tubule and the collecting duct, respectively. There are two classes of drugs that act on kidneys. Diuretics block salt reabsorption in the ascending limb while thiazides block salt reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule.

Dan, Dan, the morality man

Article Abstract:

Vice president Dan Quayle's recent sermonizing on behalf of traditional values has been a very clever political ploy. Knowing he would be attacked by liberals, he has gotten social conservatives to rally in his defense. Family values are too important to be political fodder.
