Understanding emulsions: a definition of emulsions and their effect on formulations

Article Abstract:

For the purposes of this article an emulsion is considered to be any heterogeneous system that has at least one immiscible or barely miscible liquid dispersed in another liquid in the form of tiny droplets. For cosmetic products, emulsions constitute the most common type of delivery system. They facilitate the delivery of an extensive array of ingredients to the skin and hair. Typically, semi-solid materials are used as emulsions, consisting of aqueous (hydrophilic) and an oil (hydrophobic) for cosmetic products. These two portions make up the internal and external phases of the emulsion, respectively.
