Essence and Perfection(*)

Article Abstract:

A form of explanatory objectivism about the human good that tries to meet the reductivist challenge is discussed, exemplified by the approach of Thomas Hurka, which attempts to maintain the Aristotelian connection between essence and perfection. The reductivist challenge suggests that a criterion of human well-being must be selected that does not depend on value judgments.
