Moral thinking in management: an essential capability

Article Abstract:

The increase in corporate ethics initiatives indicates the primacy of moral thinking as an essential managerial attribute. Moral thinking influences corporate fortunes by enhancing the organization's capacity to sustain itself through a web of mutuality. R.M. Hare conceives of different levels and modes of moral thought, such as principled and consequentialist thinking, which helps to coordinate managerial actions in the context of social morality. Intuitive and critical levels of moral thinking are imperative in corporate environments characterized by conflicting claims of business and society.

Suggestions for improving Donaldson's method are presented through careful attention to the requirements of universalizability. Three types of cross-cultural ethical dilemma are distinguished.

Business ethics in developing countries: a response to Rossouw (article in Business Ethics Quarterly)

Article Abstract:

There are defects in Gedeon J. Rossouw's concept of business ethics and the conditions necessary to create an ethical business culture in South Africa. History has shown that a government's imposition of its ideology upon society would destroy business morals in said society. It is also wrong to relate economic development to moral advancement. This concept has not been proven and is considered open to disputes.
