Public relations, advocacy ads, and the campaign against absenteeism during World War II

Article Abstract:

Absenteeism was a major problem of employers during WW II. To solve such dilemma, Eastern Airlines founder Edward V. Rickenbacker and Warner and Swasey (W&S), a leading machine-tool manufacturer, launched a campaign that capitalized on the prevailing sentiments during those times. Individual responsibility and wartime duties were emphasized and workers were told that labor unions were dysfunctional. However, Rickenbacker and W&S failed to consider the effectiveness of promoting work teams and participative managementin combatting absenteeism.

Sustaining work by cutting back: public action to address unemployment

Article Abstract:

Bruce O'Hara's model for solving Canada's unemployment problem which also intends to consider all three dimensions of sustainability is analyzed. O'Hara's proposal in addressing the unemployment issue is composed of three stages, namely the implementation of a thirty-two hour week, followed by reduction to a twenty-eight hour week, and finally reduction to a twenty-hour week. The implementation of the model could result in greater equity, improved economy and environmental soundness.
