Banning the bomb: a good idea for Latin America?

Article Abstract:

Latin America, with the exception of Cuba, is in a strong position to become an ideal test bed for nuclear nonproliferation. The signing of the Tlatelolco Treaty that bans nuclear weapons in the region is a concrete proof of how Latin American states are committed to nuclear nonproliferation, and nowhere is this more evident than in Argentina. Argentina's pursuit of openness when it comes to nuclear weapons programs and the adoption of measures to separate nuclear activity from electricity generation and basic research are necessary steps to achieving a nuclear-free status not only for the country but also for the entire region.

Chile: Latin America's middle way

Article Abstract:

Latin American history is replete with the lesson that economic and social inequality leads to political instability. Chile has determined to apply the lesson in the 1989 and has developed an economic program that addressed the problem of unequal distribution of wealth. In less than 10 years, Chile's economic growth averaged 6.7% a year and unemployment rate in 1993 was a low 4.5%. Its success is due to the attention given to the improvement of the infrastructure and the maintenance of political stability by working towards the eradication of poverty.
