Birth of an ugly notion: honor for a racist film draws renewed protests

Article Abstract:

The decision of the Library of Congress to choose the racist film 'The Birth of a Nation' for inclusion in theNational Film Registry has incurred the ire of the NAACP. Moreover, it was a decision that has caused a public outcry, especially since the film is a distorted account of the Reconstruction Era. It is a film that blatantly glorifies the Ku Klux Klan. With the showing of the film, the Ku Klux Klan was able to increase its membership. In response to such insensitive decision, NAACP Chrmn William F. Gibson has gone to Washington to meet with Library of Congress officials and confer about the issue.
