Power and opposition in Morocco

Article Abstract:

Morocco's multipartism has evolved over the years and the present scenario projects a healthy relationship between the King and the opposition parties. There are 15 parties, most of which are grouped under either the Democratic Bloc or the National Entente. Islamic parties have not been given legal status. Initially, the King followed a repressive policy toward nationalist parties. Democratization in the form of parliamentary opposition was realized to a certain extent in June 1993. World Bank reforms are likely to accelerate this process.

Monarchy and political reform in Morocco

Article Abstract:

The article examines two potential strategies of Morocco's King Mohammed VI: to adopt a ruling bargain for authoritarianism similar to that of the reign of his father, or to launch political reforms that will clarify the monarchy's relationship to the state. The latter can be accomplished through changes to Moroccan constitutional law.
