Second thoughts on Europe

Article Abstract:

The European Community plays a key role in uniting the European countries, but the intrusiveness of the Single Market legislation threatens to undermine EC effectiveness. The Single Market legislation has been used by countries to support their own goals,rather than the shared goals of Europe, and is undermined by different statuses of membership amongst countries.

January 1, 2002 is the day when the Euro becomes the official and only currency in 12 countries in Europe. After circulating for 2 years, the euro is currently undervalued, but this may change once it becomes the official currency. The problems involved with introducing the new currency are discussed.

Facing fragility

Article Abstract:

Questions are being raised about whether the twelve European countries that adopted the single European currency can withstand pressures to their economy and political structure. The strains that are rising within the system may result in one or more of the existing member states pulling out.
