Hedonism and Butler's stone

Article Abstract:

Joseph Butler's argument does not successfully undermine psychological hedonism because he is unable to proceed as he attempts to do from premises about what people desire to conclusions about why people have the desires they do. Butler argues that pleasure derives from satisfaction of an already existing desire for some external thing. Therefore, pleasure itself cannot be the object of desire. However, Butler does not succeed in refuting the hedonistic proposition that the desire for pleasure underlies the desire for external things.

Travelling companions

Article Abstract:

Charles Rapp has developed a strengths model of mental health care planning that focuses on clients' abilities rather than their deficiencies. Client and care manager collaborate to achieve an outcome determined by the client. Their goal is the interdependence of normal living rather than absolute independence. The model recognises clients' aspirations and rejects limiting preconceptions of ability. However, success of the approach may depend on the quality of the relationship between manager and client.

Border crossings with invisible baggage

Article Abstract:

A German stage actor narrates his experiences in several plays and other theatrical activities in the context of political turmoil during World War II. Jews were killed, fascist policies were rampant, yet artistic activities continued with zeal and fervor. His job as editorial staff in a Warsaw publishing house brought him close to Polish literature and cultivated a liking for Jewish culture.
