'Buddy' loses the plot

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the political, social and economic problems in the Philippines, as of January 2001, and the policies of President Joseph Estrada and Vice-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The author asserts that many of the problems in the Philippines arise from the fact that it still resembles a feudal system with a ruling class, a large peasant class living in poverty and an emerging middle class, thus making land reform difficult and encouraging the exploitation of Filipino workers.

Our window on the world

Article Abstract:

Journalists were seen as part of the war effort in the First and Second World Wars. Britain made them military officers to control what they wrote. The new state of warfare is internal, not international, and guerrilla, not conventional. Old rules for combat journalists do not apply in a guerrilla war zone. Updated protocols to the Geneva Conventions fail to protect journalists covering guerrilla wars.
