Butter for guns: the growth of under-the-counter trade

Article Abstract:

Countertrade has been an important part of the international arms market since World War II. The lack of liquidity in developing countries' financial systems motivates them to get around cash-based trading. In search of increased status in their parts of the world and concerned about rising costs of arms procurement, many developing countries are interested in paying for technology transfer through countertrade to enable them to produce their own arms. Nationalistic motives can also be important.

Getting rid of guns

Article Abstract:

Weapons decommissioning is gaining support among Northern Ireland citizens as the primary means of decreasing violence. Paramilitary arsenal disarmament, however, may not provide a realistic solution to continued conflict.
