CFE parties outline adapted treaty; Limits to allow NATO growth

Article Abstract:

A preliminary agreement to adapt the cold War-era treaty, the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) treaty, was made by the US, Russia and the 28 other states-parties to the treaty. The agreement has been welcomed but Russia has warned that it does not cover the whole range of problems of adaptation. The agreement emphasizes the requirement for host country consent for positioning of any foreign treaty-limited equipment.

CFE adapted at OSCE summit in Istanbul

Article Abstract:

The 30 states-parties to the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty have signed a treaty adaptation agreement, overhauling the Cold War-era structure of the original. President Clinton has proclaimed that the adapted treaty will improve peace, security and stability in Europe, but that it will not be submitted for Senate approval until Russia complies with weapons ceilings laid out in the revised treaty.

Executive summary of the adapted Conventional Armed Forces in Europe treaty

Article Abstract:

National leaders have signed an agreement that adapts the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty to the current European security environment. The revised treaty focuses on individual country rights, limits and obligations, and gives a boost to two key elements of the original treaty, extensive requirements for both inspections and information exchange.
